PhD - Program Costs

Stipend & Tuition

Effective January 5, 2023, Ph.D. students receive a competitive 12-month stipend of $32,000 and a full-tuition scholarship. By receiving stipends, Ph.D. students become part of the SUNY Graduate Student Employees Union, which provides periodic and automatic increases in stipend awards in addition to other benefits, including a low-cost health care package.

Health Care Package

Students receiving a stipend are eligible for the Graduate Student Employee Health Insurance Program. The comprehensive health benefits include coverage for medical services, hospitalization, prescription drugs, and mental health, dental, and eye care. Effective January 1, 2024, the cost for the plan, $31.52 biweekly for the enrollee and $194.97 biweekly for family, is deducted from the stipend check. 

Master of Science - Program Costs

Master’s students pay tuition for our graduate programs. SUNY Upstate is proud to offer a competitive tuition rate.

Miscellaneous Costs

The following fees are charged annually to all students. Some students may pay additional fees depending on their program and year of study.

Books and Supplies

Costs for books and supplies vary by program, but are approximately $1,300 per year for the average student.

We estimate monthly living expenses for students to be:

NOTE: The cost of health insurance is not included in this budget. All students are required to have Health Insurance, either through their parents, spouse, employer or on their own. A student policy is available through the University.
