Health tip: How can kidney stones be prevented?
About 70 percent of kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate.
The key to preventing these types of stones, says Upstate urologist Scott Wiener, MD, is to maintain consistently high urine output every day.
That means you need to drink enough water to urinate a bit more than a gallon a day. On hot days, you may need to drink even more.
A diet low in sodium, but with a normal amount of calcium, is also helpful, he says, and try to limit protein intake to no more than 4 ounces at each meal.
