This issue's "Science is Art is Science" feature comes from the laboratory of senior research
scientist Gary Nieman. And no, it's not bubble wrap. It‘s a microscopic look at the air sacs in the lungs of a rat during mechanical ventilation. Nieman developed a viewing technique which aids in his investigation of the pathogenesis and treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome and ventilator induced lung injury. Nieman is an associate professor in Upstate‘s department of surgery. He also directs the cardiopulmonary and critical care laboratory, where research focuses on the pathophysiology and treatment of septic and traumatic shock.
