Medical director explains the value of GEM care senior emergency department

GEM Care director Jamie Ciaccio, MD, talked at Maple Downs, a senior residence in Fayetteville.

Speaking with Dr. Ciaccio after the presentation, Maple Downs resident Joseph Papini was proud to explain that his son and daughter-in-law work at Upstate‘s rehabilitation therapy unit.
On a recent Saturday, Ciaccio talked with 35 residents at Maple Downs in Fayetteville. He began with historic slides of the former Community General Hospital, now part of the Upstate campus. Ciaccio‘s introductory history lesson was popular with the audience, most of whom have deep roots in this community.
Ciaccio described GEM Care as a new model for health care designed to provide care and keep seniors out of nursing homes. The center, which opened last summer, is a calm, easy-access setting that is staffed by doctors, physician assistants and nurses who have a high level of geriatric knowledge. Of particular interest to the audience was learning that GEM Care staff coordinate care with the patient‘s own doctor, with the goal to return the patient home safely.
