Cord blood banking, in the meantime

If you read this morning's blog post about the public cord blood bank Upstate is building, you may have had the same question as one reader who asked: "Since Upstate‘s bank is not yet accepting donations, what are options for donating cord blood in the meantime?"

I checked with Robert Silverman, MD, Upstate‘s chief of obstetrics and gynecology. Right now there are no public cord blood banks in Central New York. You can locate private cord blood banks on line — Google “cord blood bank,” and several pop up — but brace yourself for the $1,500 to $2,000 fee up front, plus $250 to $300 per year for storage.

This, Silverman says, underscores the need for a public cord blood bank option — which Upstate is working to provide.
