Taking a stand against prescription and synthetic drug abuse

Upstate experts are among those participating in "CNY Communities Unite: Making a Stand Against Prescription and Synthetic Drug Abuse" Monday, Dec. 12 at Crouse Hospital's Marley Education Center. The conference is sponsored by the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers of New York State.

Richard Aubry MD, director of Academic and Community Obstetrics at Upstate, and Michele Bode MD, a neonatologist at Upstate, will speak about dealing with substance use disorders in primary care and understanding and overcoming the problem of perinatal substance abuse. Michele Caliva RN from the Upstate Poison Control Center will present information about prescription drug misuse in Central New York.

Other topics include promoting health, safety and well-being of youth, the power of advocacy in the recovery community, confidentiality and emerging issues in judicial diversion. The conference is $70, or $30 for students. Some free evening sessions will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Contact the association for details and registration.
