Dr. Diane E. Meier gives the annual Herbert Lourie Memorial Lecture on Health Policy from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel's Regency Room. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Meier, a physician who directs the national Center to Advance Palliative Care, will speak about how palliative care is transforming the care of serious illness. Her organization is devoted to increasing the number and quality of palliative care programs in the United States. She received a MacArthur Foundation 'Genius Award' Fellowship in 2008, and she was recognized in 2010 by HealthLeaders as one of the 20 Americans who make health care better.

The annual lecture is sponsored by SU's Maxwell School and named for Herbert Lourie MD, a community leader, neurosurgeon and clinical professor of neurosurgery at Upstate when he was killed in 1987.
