Research into kidney disease featured in 'Upstate Health'

This image of a portion of a mouse kidney is from the laboratory of
Mira Krendel PhD, assistant professor of Cell and Developmental Biology. She was one of seven researchers across the United States who received a total of more than $1.7 million from the
NephCure Foundation for research into kidney disease, and she played a role in discovering a gene linked to
Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, a kidney disease that affects children. The image shows cells that are important for kidney filtration, with cell nuclei shown in green and the rest of the cells in red.
Krendel's photograph appears in the "Science is Art is Science" feature of the winter issue of
Upstate Health magazine, which offers free print or electronic subscriptions.
