Peek behind the scenes: Making a health magazine

A magazine, of course, does not create itself. Stories must be written, headlines crafted, pages designed, photos shot. We are well into development of the winter issue of Upstate Health, and I thought you might enjoy a peek behind the scenes.

poieszHere is Bob Mescavage (far right, with camera) photographing Bernie Poiesz MD and son Michael Poiesz MD with their dogs during their Saturday daybreak hike/run at Labrador Hollow in Truxton. That's photography assistant Taylor Papworth trying to keep the attention of the dogs.

jodiAnd here is photographer Susan Kahn shooting pictures of Jodi Dowthwaite, PhD, a research scientist in orthopedic surgery and 3rd degree black belt at the LaVallee USA Black Belt Champions mixed martial arts dojo in Manlius.

These people are a few of the people you'll find on the pages of Upstate Health, a quarterly magazine that inspires healthy living with stories about medical care and wellness and subjects that pertain to life in Syracuse and Central New York.
