The children's hospital was an addition to Upstate University Hospital which was completed in July 2009. Today, 53 attending physicians, 39 residents and two fellows take care of children in the hospital. Upstate's pediatric emergency room saw 23,977 patients from August 2010 to July 2011, and 58 percent of those patients were admitted to the hospital.

The occupancy rate averages 72 percent in the children's hospital, meaning an average 50 children are patients in the hospital each day. Their average length of stay is just over four days. Inpatient surgeries from August 2010 to July 2011 numbered 1,776, and outpatient surgeries during that time numbered 3,429.

The Golisano project manager was Nicholas Steffen. The design team included architects Greg Mare from Karlsberger, Peter King from King & King Architects and Burton Thomas; and interior designers Tony Borick from Ram-Tech Engineers and Richard Applebaum from Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt.
