Bike HelmetStarting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, Upstate University Hospital has 540 bicycle helmets to give away at the New York State Fair. Line up at the Upstate exhibit in the Science and Industry Building near the main gate.

Children and their parents will have to pledge that they will use the helmet each time they ride a bike. Upstate professionals will help make sure the helmets fit properly.

Zulma Tovar-Spinoza MD, assistant professor of neurosurgery, was interviewed for the Health Link on Air radio program. She said three children were admitted to Upstate University Hospital that week, having suffered head injuries that bike helmets could have prevented.

Parents may not realize the severity of injury that children can suffer from falling off bicycles. Chronic headaches may develop, skull fractures are not unusual, and some falls can be life-threatening. "It's something we can prevent so easily," she stresses.

The bike helmet giveaway is made possible through a joint effort involving Upstate's trauma services and department of pediatric neurosurgery.
