Jon Gdovin started life two months premature, weighing just 3 pounds, 6 ounces.

As a toddler, he developed a childhood cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and his parents brought him to Upstate's pediatric oncology unit for treatment from their home in Binghamton.

Today Gdovin, a physician assistant at Orthopedic Associates, is something of a role model. He spoke to Vestal's cross-country summer camp recently, telling the young runners: "Don't look at what your limitations are. Make sure you have fun with it. Anything's possible if you put your mind to it."

Gdovin is an example of his own advice. He recently completed the Lake Placid Ironman competition. He swam 2.4 miles in Mirror Lake, pedaled 112 miles on a bike and then ran 26.2 miles. He accomplished this in 15 hours, 25 minutse and 5 seconds.

The previous year, he completed the Syracuse 70.3 half Ironman, which takes place this year on Sept. 18.
