You must be 16 or older to job shadow EXCEPT for placement in the OR, Emergency Department, Cancer Center Infusion, Psychiatry and OB/GYN, where minimum age of 18 is required.

Minors (under the age of 18) are only permitted to shadow during daytime hours from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Shadowing is not allowed during the overnight shift.
- Participants are allowed one (1) Shadow Experience per year (12 months) - an Experience is up to 3 days, in one department.
- A shadow day may consist of only a few hours or all-day (8 hours) depending on the host department.

Participants will only observe, without any hands-on interaction with a patient, medical equipment, medical records, computers, and will not enter an area of contamination such as isolation rooms, soiled linen areas, etc.

- Clinical Engineering
- Dental
- Emergency Department
- Laboratory & Pathology
- Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PT, OT, SLP)
- Radiology
- Respiratory Therapy
- Social Work
- Ultrasound
- Urology
- Women's Health
- In an area of interest where an applicant has a commitment from an Upstate employee for a job shadow experience*
Applications for General Surgery and Psychiatry will be paused until June 2025.
PLEASE NOTE
- Do not submit multiple applications.
- If more than one preferred area of interest is listed, only the first listed will be referred.
- We have a limited selection of areas available for job shadow experiences. If you choose to write in an area other than those offered, your application will be declined.
- Canceled job shadow experiences will not be rescheduled.
- Allow six to eight weeks for application processing.
- We cannot guarantee placement but will do our best to find you an experience that matches your interest.
