Dr Wiener's research interests include the pathophysiology of kidney stone disease, particularly from the perspective of comparative and evolutionary biology. He has done work, while at UCSF, on how the shape of the papilla in the kidney is related to kidney stone formation and how the fluid flow patterns within the tubules called nephrons contribute to this process. He is working collaboratively with researchers at SUNY Upstate and Syracuse University to better elucidate the role that fluid dynamics plays in the formation of kidney stones and in BPH, how anatomic variation of the kidney may influence stone formation, and is interested in the impact of our environment on the formation of kidney stones. While at UCSF he undertook studies to understand geographical variation in kidney stone surgery in the state of California and spent a year in the lab studying the microscopic and atomic makeup of kidney stones.
