MSIII Concurrent Electives

The College of Medicine allows MS3 students to take certain concurrent electives during clerkships. Because of the time commitment required for clerkships and how full the workload already is, we realize this option is not right for everyone. There are specific criteria to meet to be eligible to take concurrent electives during MS3 year. The College of Medicine policy on graduation requirements and electives can be found at the following link. See the section labeled “Electives”, and in particular item#12 which addresses the criteria for MS3 students to take concurrent electives.
Graduation Requirements/Honors Policy

If you are interested in pursuing a concurrent elective during the MS3 year, take a look at the course catalog at the following link. Each course will indicate if it is a concurrent elective as well as what the required prerequisites are. Some courses have information in the catalog about what their schedule of activities will be, but you may have to reach out to the course contact to find out if the elective could be done outside of clerkship hours (for example electives that only meet in the evening or are done asynchronously at your own pace).

Adding a course can be done through MyUpstate banner. There is a prompt in the “Add or Drop Course” function through banner that states “If you are an MS3 student…” and will send you to a Brightspace activity to complete. You will need to complete this activity and the attestation within to determine if you are eligible to enroll in any concurrent electives. If you have any specific questions about how to use the add/drop function in banner, please contact registrar@upstate.edu.
