Pediatric Kidney Transplant
Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital is proud to be the only center in upstate New York to perform kidney transplants in children without interruption over the last 25 years. The resilience and success of the program is built on the foundation of collaboration between the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology and the broader Upstate Transplant team, including surgeons, transplant nurse coordinators, immunology specialists, social workers and other professionals.
The Upstate Division of Pediatric Nephrology provides care for children with complex congenital and other kidney diseases from a 17 county region of Central New York, serving over 1.5 million people, from infants to teenagers and young adults. For those children requiring transplant, the Pediatric Nephrology team provides continuity to families embarking on this life sustaining journey.
The program has been an early and aggressive adopter of efforts to increase access, including expanded criteria for deceased donors and increased access to living donor transplantation, including altruistic donors. Access has not diminished outcome. In the end, continuity and coordination produce results. Over the last 10 years, 100% of kidney transplants on children at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital were functional at 1 and 3 years.
