Gun Safety with Stop the Bleed Training

Upstate Trauma Services in collaboration with Safe Kids, Upstate NY & University Police provides a joint presentation entitled, “Penetrating Trauma Prevention & Safe Gun Handling.”

Created and geared towards first time gun owners, this presentation highlights additional material to support the Stop the Bleed mission with expansive discussion on the pathophysiology of penetrating injuries.

Additionally, it provides visual and interactive aids to better understand different types of injuries related to velocity. Finally, it supports caregivers and families on initiating healthy communication around proper gun storage.

Resources provided include materials endorsed by Project ChildSafe and the following:

  • Gun Locks
  • Safe Storage Pledges
  • Information on:
    • Firearms and suicide prevention
    • Gun Safety and your health
    • 10 Tips for Firearm Safety in your phone
    • Hunting Safety Checklist for families

When a patient presents with intentional violent trauma, a Violence Trauma Assessment is completed

Based on this assessment, an individual plan is formulated with the goal of preventing further injury

They are followed throughout their hospitalization and after discharge

Referrals are made to community partners that provide many valuable resources, including:

  • Mental health care
  • Primary care
  • Mentorship
  • Safe/secure housing
  • School & educational opportunities
  • Obtaining employment
  • Support with substance use disorders
  • Food, clothing
  • Disability assistance
  • Legal help
  • Child care
  • Various other services

Participants remain in the program until they feel independently safe and secure
