Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program

The Colorectal Division and Upstate University Hospital is committed to the optimal recovery of all the patients it cares for. We have established a comprehensive approach that includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and all other members of our healthcare team to provide a rapid recovery. Our ERAS program addresses people who require removal of portions of the intestine. It starts at the first office visit before surgery, preparing people to have an operation, and extends through surgery and into the recovery afterward. We combine a number of "best practices" that combine to optimal recovery. These include approaches to nutrition, pain and nausea control, blood sugar control, and activity.
