Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLO)

Upstate Medical University has a core set of institutional learning outcomes (ISLOs) that describe a set of core abilities all students will demonstrate during their time at Upstate. The ISLOs prepare students enrolled across all Upstate programs for careers in the health and biomedical sciences, a direct link to the university's mission. The ISLOs were updated and approved by university leadership, the four college deans and faculty governance groups in 2017, and vetted during the institution's Middle States Accreditation Self-Study in 2018. The ISLOs are:

  1. Knowledge and skills specific to their discipline
  2. Ability to engage in inquiry, analysis/reasoning, and creative problem-solving
  3. Ethical and professional behavior
  4. Effective communication

The ISLOs are translated in the individual program curricula through course objectives and learning activities.
