When Upstate Golisano Childrens Hospital opened in 2009, it became the essential link for children and families across Central New York who were faced with illness and injury, and specialized health needs. While most patients have been well served, it is recognized that improvements are necessary to enhance the health and life outcomes for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
The new Golisano Center for Special Needs is poised to meet the challenges that children with I/DD and their families face through enhanced clinical care, education, basic research, and initiatives to promote inclusion and community building. It will provide comprehensive, coordinated and scientifically based medical and behavioral care for children and adolescents.

The Biobehavioral Health Unit offers behavioral and mental health care to individuals with multiple mental and behavioral health diagnoses who also exhibit severe destructive behavior in an inpatient setting. The Golisano Center for Special Needs offers comprehensive, coordinated, and evidence-based medical and behavioral care for children and adolescents with a wide range of intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Biobehavioral Health Unit (BBHU) Inpatient Unit is an 11-bed facility that specializes in behavioral and mental health care for individuals ages 5 to 17. This unit provides intensive, one-on-one behavioral healthcare for children and adolescents who have complex mental health and behavioral diagnoses, including those exhibiting severe and disruptive behaviors.
