Upstate Active Clinical Trials

Study Title:

A pilot study in persons with spinal cord injury: Does Quadro-Pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (QP-TMS) augment recovery of voluntary movement?

What is the purpose of the study? (in Layman's terms, please describe the study)

To examine the efficacy of repetitive Quadro-Pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex for improving motor function after spinal cord injury

Upstate Institutional Review Board (IRB) Number:

397596

Study/Protocol ID:

397596

Patient Age Group:

Adults

Principal Investigator:

Blair Calancie, PhD

Who is eligible?

Adult individuals with spinal cord injury at or above T10 level with some voluntary movement in at least one of the hands/legs.

What is involved if I participate?

  • How long is the study?
Approximately 4 months including 4 weeks of intervention and testing followed by 3 one-month wash-out (i.e. without intervention) periods. Single testing session lasts about 2 hours, single training session – 1 hour.
  • Is transportation provided or reimbursed?
    Yes
  • Is parking provided or reimbursed?
    Yes
  • What tests and procedures are involved?
The study involves repeated testing of the hand/leg function via muscle recordings, non-invasive brain and nerve stimulation, motor performance tests. Multiple hand or walking training sessions are also included in the study.

Other Information:

Subjects will be paid $50 for each test battery they complete. Each of the 4 interventions has 4 test batteries associated with it, for a maximum possible payment of $800 per subject. As an incentive to complete the entire protocol, subjects will receive a final payment of $400 after completing the test battery one month after finishing intervention #4, for a maximum possible total payment of $1200. These payments will span a period of roughly 4 months.
