SUNY Networks of Excellence

Dr. Mark SchmittDear Colleagues,

I often hear "why doesn't the Research Foundation give more of our indirects back to us" and the answer is they are trying but through a competitive process called the SUNY Networks of Excellence (NoE). NoE grants, which can be significant in size, are given for cross-SUNY collaborative projects and meetings with the idea that this will foster large collaborative grant proposals and funding; they are essentially seed dollars for collaborative pilot grants. There are currently 6 NoEs:

  • 4E (Energy, Environment, Economics, and Education)
  • Health
  • Brain
  • MAM (Materials and Manufacturing)
  • Arts and Humanities
  • Teaching, Learning, and Assessment

As I have mentioned NoEs on campus I am usually met with a blank stare so I do not think there is broad knowledge of this funding mechanism on our campus and this is why I am reaching out to you with the following information which includes a FAQ sheet on the NoEs and a link to a FlipBook on the NoEs that will be updated.

For more information, visit SUNY Research Foundation Networks of Excellence.

I strongly encourage interested faculty to begin now in identifying possible collaborators within the SUNY system as the networks will soon be arranging meetings to establish collaborative research projects and releasing grant proposal deadlines.

Best,
Mark E. Schmitt, PhD
