Public Health General Education

In response to a continuing need for a variety of leadership training opportunities at Upstate, the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is excited to announce a series of three 1-credit course modules that will provide participants with the opportunity to:
 
- learn about Lean Management in Healthcare and to
- put what is learned into practice to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.
 
The series begins in January 2020, and the courses will be led by James Cody MPA, the former director of the VA Medical Center here in Syracuse. Each course will award 1 graduate credit, chargeable at standard SUNY Upstate graduate tuition rates. The three 1-credit "modules" are designed to be taken in sequence, and will be offered on evenings and weekends, to be most accessible to working professionals.

PHGE601: Introduction to Lean-Systems in Healthcare (Module #1)

Registration Period: Friday, November 8, 2019 through Friday, January 3, 2020
Module 1 will introduce the concepts and components of Lean-Systems Thinking with respect to identifying "Waste" and "Variation" associated with the service delivery system in healthcare. "Lean is built upon the concepts of Six Sigma and Continuous Quality Improvement, enabling an Organization to create and sustain an environment where the employees are directly involved with the re-designing of healthcare systems to achieve quality outcomes and patient satisfaction.

PHGE602: Application of Lean Management (Module #2)

Class Dates & Times: February 8, 2020 (9:00 - 12:30 PM), February 15, 2020 (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM), and February 22, 2020 (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM)
Location: Setnor 4507 (accessible through Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210)
Pre-Reqs: Successful completion of Module 1
Registration Period: Tuesday, February 4, 2020 - Friday, February 7, 2020
Participants will apply Lean Management techniques to a patient care system. During Sessions 1 and 2, Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIWs) will be conducted on each system that the participants have identified for improvement.

PHGE603: Lean Management and Leadership in Healthcare (Module #3)

Class Time: Tuesday Evenings, 6:00 - 9:00 PM

Registration Period: Friday, February 22, 2020 through Friday, March 13, 2020
Participants will learn about effective leadership techniques in the Healthcare industry and explore the role of Lean Management in leadership development.

 
Registering:

Students will need to register by contacting Jennifer Brennan (brennanj@upstate.edu) in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Students will need to complete an Add/Drop Form and a Non-matriculation Form. Registration must be completed during the module's assigned registration period. 

 
Tuition and Fees:
