Public Health and Preventive Medicine

The Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine is one of 26 departments that constitute the Norton College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University. We are committed to educating students and conducting research in the broad disciplines of public health, preventive medicine, health promotion, and health services for the communities we serve.

In addition to housing the Upstate Master of Public Health (including the MPH, MD/MPH, and CAS programs), the department teaches in the MD program, and also houses:

  • The Consortium for Culture and Medicine – an educational consortium of regional universities and colleges dedicated to teaching humanities content related to medicine
  • Community Engaged Learning Program – an office that connects MD students to learning opportunities in the Central NY community
  • The Center for Research & Evaluation – a biostatistical and research methods core facility

 Additionally, faculty engage in their own research, scholarship, and service endeavors.

Keeping the public healthy is the overall goal of the Upstate Public Health Program, and we provide a variety of opportunities to a diverse group of students who are also seeking to impact the health of the population.

Additional Education Programs

In addition to our four main Public Health programs, we also offer additional educational opportunities designed to address the evolving challenges of healthcare delivery. This includes a Preventive Medicine Program with a presence in all four years of medical education and a series of three 1-credit Public Health General Education courses.

Preventive Medicine

The Preventive Medicine Program teaches the essentials of epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, clinical prevention, population-oriented prevention, health systems, health policy and evidence-based medicine throughout the four-year curriculum in the medical school.

We offer a series of three 1-credit course modules focusing on Lean Management in Healthcare. These modules are designed to give participants the chance to learn about improving patient outcomes and satisfaction while putting their new skills into action.

Center for Research and Evaluation

The Center for Research and Evaluation conducts, supports, and disseminates research that aims to improve clinical outcomes and enhance public health. The center offers design, methodological, analytic, and biostatistical consultation to the faculty, and researchers in Central New York.
