Upstate University Hospital opens eight-bed inpatient psychiatric unit for adolescents

The eight-bed unit will be staffed with child and adolescent psychiatrists, nurses, mental health therapists and more, and will focus on the treatment of children 12 to 17 years of age. The average length of stay is expected to last five to seven days.

7 West is an 8-Bed Unit in University Hospital downtown campus serving youth ages 12-17 who require short term, acute inpatient mental health care. Medical necessity for admission is determined by a psychiatric provider and subject to bed availability.

Unit staff are trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Treatment is based on an adaptation of DBT and individualized for each patient. A multidisciplinary team provides care with a high staff to patient ratio to help meet individualized needs of each patient.
