The SUNY Upstate Eating Disorder Program is located within the Department of Psychiatry in the Adult Outpatient Clinic. This program focuses on treating patients who are 18 years of age and older. Issues of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder and other disordered eating symptoms that may be a combination of the previous listed disorders are treated on an outpatient basis.
Individuals seeking treatment should expect to be evaluated by an eating disorder specialist in the first couple of sessions to see if their symptoms can be managed on an outpatient basis. If so, the individual will be seen for individual therapy weekly, referred to be followed by a primary care physician for medical management, offered psychiatric medication management and will also be referred to a registered dietician for nutrition management. If the patient needs a higher level of care such as a partial hospital program or a residential treatment program for their initial treatment of an eating disorder, the client will be advised and referred somewhere based on their insurance and financial needs.
The program has a non-diet approach for treatment and utilizes a psychodynamic and family therapy theoretical approach which includes a feminist perspective.
