Nurse Practitioner (NP) Fellowship Program
Our educational purpose is to train Nurse Practitioner (NP) fellows in the fundamentals of addiction medicine including (1) the elements of specific treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) and (2) assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders in the presence of comorbid SUDs.
- Fellows will learn how to assess and diagnose substance use disorders (SUDs).
- Fellows will learn the basics of inpatient and outpatient substance use treatment modalities and services, focusing on the continuum of care for SUDs, including utilization of community services.
- Fellows will learn principles of diagnosis of other psychiatric disorders in the context of SUDs.
- Fellows will learn how to apply evidence-based pharmacological treatments for psychiatric disorders in the context of SUDs. The emphasis is on safety of medication use in the presence of multiple behavioral and medical comorbidities.
- Fellows will learn various psychosocial modalities of treatment (CBT, MI, psychodynamic psychotherapy, etc).
- The academic curriculum and clinical rotation at SUNY Upstate will train fellows to develop skills and expertise in the areas of harm reduction, substance use disorders (SUD), and co-occurring SUD and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, medical complications of SUD’s will be emphasized (OIH, CIH, etc.)
