Upstate New York Poison Center Releases First Quarterly Data Report
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 11th, 2025) –The Upstate New York Poison Center has released the first edition of its new Quarterly Data Report, offering a detailed look at poison exposure trends and response efforts from January through March 2025.
During the first quarter, the center managed 10,291 exposure cases across its 54-county service area. A significant majority—71%—of these cases were managed on-site, either at a residence or workplace, while 29% required intervention at a health care facility.
Unintentional exposures continue to make up the majority of cases, particularly among children under six years old. The report also highlights that more than 1,600 calls came in requesting information on drug and substance use, environmental concerns, and poison prevention.
A growing area of concern is the increase in cannabis-related exposures, especially involving edibles. These cases were most common among pediatric patients and represent a continuing challenge in poison prevention education.
“This report is a valuable tool for public health professionals, health care providers, and community organizations working to prevent poisonings and respond effectively to exposure risks,” said Jeanna Marraffa, PharmD, MPH, Clinical Director at the Upstate New York Poison Center. “We’re committed to sharing timely data that helps keep our communities safe.”
*The Quarterly Data Report will be featured in each health care professionals newsletter and will also be available here on our website for public access and sharing.
