Program Description
This fellowship is not yet APPIC/APA accredited as it is a newly created program. The goals are to meet guidelines for APPIC accreditation and prepare candidates for Board Certification in Neuropsychology.
The Neuropsychology Fellowship will consist of a 2-year, full-time training program that is designed to comply with current guidelines for specialty training in clinical neuropsychology and prepare the fellow for board certification in clinical neuropsychology. The fellowship is primarily adult-focused, but based on the fellow’s interests, there may be some pediatric opportunities.
Program Goals
- Two years of full-time training in clinical neuropsychological evaluation
- Adherence to current guidelines to prepare the fellow to become board-certified.
- Learn to effectively communicate results to referral sources, patients, and their families.
- Design and implementation of research in neuropsychology including experience with clinical trials in treatment of neurological disorders (dementia, epilepsy).
Program Setting
Located in Central New York, Syracuse is a beautiful, friendly, and affordable place to live. The city ranks 11th for Best Places to Live for Young Professionals by Forbes Advisors. Employment, pay, housing affordability, lifestyle, and cost of living earned it this ranking.
The training program is housed primarily in the Neuropsychology Assessment Program in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation department at Upstate Medical University located in Syracuse, NY. The Upstate University Health System includes University Hospital and numerous satellite operations and is the only academic medical center in Central New York. The hospital has a large catchment area covering 17 counties in CNY.
Our program consists of 5 full-time neuropsychologists, 3 of whom are board-certified. We also work closely with many departments at Upstate including Geriatrics, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.
Our department also has a rehabilitation psychology fellowship program. The neuropsychology fellow will share didactic experiences with the rehabilitation psychology fellows and with other psychology fellows at Upstate.
Program Training Model
Neuropsychology Fellows will complete both years of training primarily in the Neuropsychology Assessment Program (NAP) outpatient clinic.
- 75% time: Clinical Activities
- 15% time: Didactics/Supervision
- 10% time: Research
Clinical Activities: Each month the fellow will be assigned to a major rotation and a minor rotation and a supervisor for each rotation. All major rotations will be completed in the NAP outpatient clinic and the fellow will have the opportunity to work with different neuropsychologists during the fellowship. Minor rotations can either be completed with a different neuropsychologist from the major rotation or can be completed in an allied psychology placement (e.g., brain and behavior program, concussion management program). Our NAP clinic receives a majority of referrals for Geriatrics, Neurology, and Neurosurgery, but we also receive referrals from other departments in the hospital and from many medical providers in the community (e.g., primary care). Clinical training is focused on a collaborative team approach with the referring provider to assess diagnostic differentials for medically complex patients. Fellows will also have the opportunity to develop skills in providing feedback to patients and their families and referring providers.
Didactics/Supervision: Fellows will be provided with weekly supervision (minimum 2 hours) and a formalized didactic program. Didactics will include seminars, case conferences, fact finding, rounds, journal clubs, in both the Neuropsychology Assessment Program and other departments at Upstate (e.g., neurology, geriatrics, psychiatry). Research: Fellows will have the opportunity to assist with ongoing clinical trials in the geriatrics department and other departments at Upstate. Additionally, other research opportunities are available depending on the interests of the fellow.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is consistent with current NIH guidelines. All fellows are full-time state employees and will be provided with a benefits package that includes medical coverage, vacation, and paid sick leave.
Application Process
Currently, we have one opening for a 2-year fellowship, with a plan to add a second neuropsychology fellowship position in 2026.
Education/Training Qualifications
Requirements include APA or CPA approved internship with preferred emphasis in neuropsychology and completion of doctoral requirements. Prior to appointment as a postdoctoral fellow, individuals must provide evidence of completion of all requirements for the doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university or professional school program, including completion of an APA or CPA accredited internship training; official transcript, copy of diploma or official letter from the Department Chair or Training Director will be acceptable. Before beginning the fellowship, the fellow must obtain NY State limited permit in psychology. Postdoctoral fellows are appointed to full time positions for one year, renewable for an additional year. Upon completion of the first year of postdoctoral training, the fellow is expected to be license eligible for the State of NY, meaning they have successfully passed the EPPP- Part 1 and met the experience requirements of 1750 clock hours per year for each of the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral years.
