Hematology/Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant, and Stem Cell Transplant Programs

Hematology Oncology (10E)

The Hematology/Oncology Unit (10E) is a 27 bed oncology unit. Annual admissions primarily treat breast cancer, Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, lymphoma, lung cancer, multiple myeloma, testicular carcinoma, solid tumors, hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, and peripheral blood stem cell transplant patients.

Oncology nursing staff are committed to excellence in the delivery of holistic care to all cancer patients and their loved ones. They provide for the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of patients and their families. The focus is on relief for the symptoms of cancer and its treatment, as well as the comfort of patients. Much effort is put forth to facilitate the achievement and maintenance of optimal lifestyle patterns such as those of nutritional habits, sleep and rest, coping, comfort, exercise and mobility.

Bone Marrow Transplant Program (10H)

The Bone Marrow Transplant Program, the first in central New York, opened in 1992. Its major objective is to provide optimal medical and nursing care for all patients undergoing cytoreduction and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The BMT Program performs both autologous and allogeneic transplants. Working closely with the clinical apheresis service and the cryopreservation laboratory, the transplant program coordinates the management of patients for pre- and post-transplant as well as during the transplant admission. Representatives from Radiation Oncology, Social Service, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dietary Service also participate in the management of transplant patients. The unit has six private rooms. The unit has a separate air-handling system provided through HEPA filtration.

Nursing Staff

The staff in both areas are committed to excellence in the delivery of holistic care. They provide for the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and their families, and are dedicated to promoting quality of life and providing a compassionate environment for optimal physical and emotional comfort. Families are encouraged and supported to be directly involved in their loved ones plan of care. Nurses provide extensive teaching related to medications, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, lab values, catheter care, and the importance of follow-up care. They assist, support, and often take part in research projects and provide consultations for other nurses in the health care field.

Together with health care professionals from other disciplines, the oncology nurses foster a climate of respect, support, education, communication and cooperation between the health care team, patients and their families.

Patient Education

Education is provided to patients and their significant others about the disease, its treatment, side effects and expected outcome, and the plan of care.

Shared Governance

Staff from each area comprise shared governance teams where decision regarding care provided and unit practice is determined. This group is responsive and committed to meeting identified needs in a collaborative manner.

Community Involvement

Participation in community events is strongly encouraged and is evidenced by National Cancer Survivors Day which is hosted locally by University Hospital. University Hospital staff and families participate in local cancer fund raising events. Staff also sponsor educational programs at OASIS and participate in the annual NYS Fair to increase community awareness.
