Apheresis Service 8th Floor
Upstate University Hospital's Apheresis Service is located on the 8th floor of the Hospital. The team works collaboratively with many specialties, providing apheresis services to adults and pediatrics, in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Inpatients that are too ill to be transported or cared for in the apheresis unit, are treated at the bedside.
Our mission is to provide excellence in patient care for apheresis and infusion therapy.
Collection Services
Procedures provided: Autologous and Allogeneic Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell and Therapeutic Cell collections for the Upstate Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Service and the National Marrow Donor Program® (Be The Match Registry®).
Therapeutic Services
Procedures provided: Therapeutic Plasma Exchange, Red Blood Cell Exchange, White Blood Cell Depletion, Platelet Depletion, Photopheresis, and Therapeutic Phlebotomy.
Infusion Services
Our service supports many of the Upstate outpatient clinics by providing transfusion and infusion outpatient services.
Multidisciplinary Patient Centered Care
Our service actively participates in the weekly Bone Marrow Transplant rounds working closely with staff in the HLA lab, the BMT service and the Regional Oncology Center (ROC). By allowing open communication between all services involved, we are able to work out issues in planning care making the transplant journey as seamless as possible.
Specialty Nursing At It's Best
Apheresis RN's have a broad scope of general nursing experience and have undergone extensive on the job training to become experts in a highly specialized area. Our nurses not only provide compassionate care for their patients, but demonstrate a proficiency in managing the technical aspects of a machine at the same time. All staff participates in unit shared governance activities that continually monitor and assess quality of care issues. With a wide range of challenging learning opportunities and exposure to so many ages and specialties, no two days in apheresis are ever the same!
