Ancillary Assist

Role Description

Ancillary Assist is anyone with clinical experience (not necessarily licensed) who is able to assist with patient care needs.

Ancillary Assists are needed in all bedside areas and could be helpful with unit tasks needed for a group of patients in a nursing unit or as part of a surge team to care for larger patient assignments than normal operations by utilizing the TEAM nursing approach.

Examples of tasks/skills this role could perform are:

  • Responds to call lights
  • Transport patients
  • Restock supplies
  • Toileting
  • Clean high-touch surfaces in the common areas (e.g., nurse's station, break rooms, etc)
  • Hourly rounding
  • I & O's
  • Finger sticks
  • Ambulation
  • Turning and repositioning
  • Vital signs

Requirements

  • Standing and walking required
  • Previous patient care experience required

Intended Audience

  • Anyone with clinical experience (not necessarily licensed)

Prerequisites

  • Previous patient care experience
  • Just-in-time training to be provided on unit

COVID Unit Clerk Assist

Role Description

The COVID Unit Clerk Assist will be assigned to COVID units. This role does not enter COVID patient rooms, but provides support to our nursing staff.

  • Answer phones (e.g., other departments, patient family and friends, etc)
  • Responds to call lights from the desk
  • Clean high-touch surfaces in the common areas (e.g., nurse's station, break rooms, etc)
  • Call other department to request resources (e.g., dietary, equipment, transport, etc.)
  • Enter equipment requests into the MERS

Requirements

  • Standing and walking required

Intended Audience

  • Non-Clinical and/or Unlicensed Clinical Staff preferred

Prerequisites

  • None
  • Just-in-time training to be provided on unit

COVID Unit Support Runner

Role Description

The COVID Unit Support Runner will staff COVID units at Upstate University Hospital and/or Upstate Community Hospital to provide safe and efficient care by providing the following duties:

  • Round on Isolation Carts and restock as necessary
  • Respond to Vocera calls from staff
  • Deliver necessary items to the rooms
    • Linen
    • Supplies
    • PPE
    • Lab draw supplies
    • Patient comfort items (e.g., water, extra pillows, etc.)
    • Bring labs to laboratory
  • Round hourly to check if staff in rooms need anything
    • Thumbs up means ok
    • Thumbs down means they need help; Call them on Vocera

This non-clinical role does not enter COVID patient rooms, but provides support to our nursing staff.

Prerequisites

  • Just-in-time training to be provided on unit

Instructions

  • Report directly to unit for shift
  • Vocera will be used for this role. If you do not have your own, the Charge Nurse will provide one and instructions for use

Clothing and PPE

  • Wear scrubs if you have them or you can get them from the hospital to wear on your shift from UH 6E or COMMU 3E.  Otherwise wear comfortable clothes and something that can be easily washed upon returning home.
  • Wear sneakers or comfortable shoes.

RN or LPN Assist

Role Description

Clinical staff re-deployed through Labor Pool towork in an inpatient area (Examples include but are not limited to: Peds to Adult, MS to ICU, Ambulatory to MS, OR to ICU).

The "RN/LPN Assist" nurse will work to the fullest extent of their ability/licensure to meet the patient care needs of the area they are assigned to.

Examples include:

  1. Full patient care assignment (several days of orientation may be provided based on need).
  2. Being absorbed in to a bedside RN assignment as an "RN/LPN assist" with skills they are comfortable doing.  This model will enable us to continue to meet patient care demands in a tiered staffing model.

Some examples of skills of the "RN/LPN Assist" include:

  • Medication administration
  • Assessment (RN Only)
  • Vital signs
  • I & O's
  • Finger sticks/blood draws
  • IV Therapy
  • Dressing changes
  • EPIC documentation

Requirements

  • LPN/RN with prior inpatient clinical experience or comfortable with the inpatient setting
  • EPIC access as needed

Intended Audience

  • Any RN or LPN

Prerequisites

  • Just-in-time training to be provided on unit as needed
  • Surge PBO available when needed
