Upstate Website is Going Responsive

Feature

As more and more devices are built with ever varying screen sizes, it becomes increasingly difficult to create a website that is easy to navigate for all users. Responsive Web Design (RWD) is an answer to this dilemma, and allows for websites to scale to whatever device they are being viewed on. From a desktop computer to a smart phone, the page width and content scales to put the most important information within easy reach for a viewer.

With our initial migration into Cascade, our first action was to make the system as easy to use for you, our Content Managers, so that you can continue to maintain their websites without problems. Once we customized the system to a certain degree, we decided that now was the time to tackle going responsive, and make the website easy to use for our viewers.

Our first "test-site" in responsive design is the Upstate Stroke Center website. The new responsive stroke website is not yet live to the general public, but you can view the beta version as it is being finished through this link: www.upstate.edu/stroke-rwd/. Go to the link and when the page loads, resize your browser window and see how the site scales to fit. We have also made a few other modifications in using a slightly larger type size and some minor color modifications.

Webmaster Retires

Some of you may have already heard the news, but for those who have not, Larry Polly, an Upstate employee for more than 41 years and the University Webmaster since the University had a website, has retired!  He leaves a huge hole in the Campus Web Staff, his shoes are really too big to be filled by one person.  But we have made some staffing changes and will be hiring a new person in the future to help in the shortage of programming talent we now face.  Look for the posting on the HR Jobs website soon.

Latest Sites to be Migrated

As we continue the migration into the CMS, more and more pages become easier to manage.  Here are some of the most recent sites:

Cascade CMS Training Classes

We continue to provide training classes for website editors.  These classes are hands-on sessions to learn the basics of the CMS and how to do most common functions that our editors do.  As site(s) are completed, you'll be contacted about training on the CMS. In the interim, you can review the Training Website for information on navigating and using the CMS.  If you need a refresher on the training, please contact our new Training Coordinator:  Pete Thomas - [email protected].

These quarterly newsletters are a service of SUNY Upstate Campus Web Technology. To ensure delivery of this newsletter to your inbox and to enable images to load in future mailings, please add [email protected] to your e-mail address book or safe senders list.
