As CEO, I am impressed every day by what I see in our hospital. Through these communications I hope to share with you the achievements I see here, as well as insights as to where we are headed, so you too can have the same knowledge of what we are doing to keep Upstate University Hospital — and our entire clinical system — continually moving forward.

Sim Center Opens New Possibilities

One of the best things about being part of a medical university is the innovation we are immersed in every day. Recently, Upstate’s brilliant new simulation center opened in lower level of Weiskotten Hall. The purpose: to build highly-trained multidisciplinary teams.

While students immediately benefit from being able to test their teamwork in just about any setting that can be imagined, our healthcare workforce will too.

Impressive Stroke Accomplishments

Upstate is the region’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center and has the largest and longest-established neuroscience team. We also offer remote telestroke services to 11 regional hospitals. This fall marked another first: the first "Stroke Camp" in New York state, which is a national program for survivors and their caregivers and powered by volunteers from the stroke team.

More Data, More Dashboards

As it’s much easier to look at a graph or chart than a spreadsheet, we are always looking for fresh ways that allow data to be presented in a user-friendly way. The Epic team, for example, created a new dashboard that shows our high level operations at a glance. This touchscreen display is installed in a central area in my office so this information is continually in front of us.
