Oncology nurse Steve Thomas, RN, and Upstate Vice President for Development Eileen Pezzi, MPA, received honors during the Upstate Cancer Center annual research retreat May 16.

Thomas, nurse manager of Upstate Cancer Center Hematology Oncology at Oswego, was recognized with the Beth Baldwin Oncology Nursing Award.

Thomas has nearly 40 years of nursing experience, including more than two decades as a hematology oncology nurse at Upstate Cancer Center at Oswego.

An excerpt from his nomination reads: "Steve holds a special combination of expertise, knowledge, clinical skills and a deep understanding of the emotional, psychological and social challenges that cancer patients. He ensures that the patients understand the diagnosis and treatment options available to them which empowers them and supports autonomy during the process. He also helps patients navigate through the healthcare system as it can become complex and overwhelming. Steve is fair and gentle, and frankly, the best nurse I've ever met."

The award is named for Baldwin, who serves as executive director of the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, which has raised more than $4 million for breast cancer research at Upstate.

Cancer researchers have established the Eileen Pezzi Award for Outstanding Cancer Research at Upstate Medical University in recognition of Pezzi's leadership of the Upstate Foundation.

"Eileen has demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing the mission of Upstate with a special passion for supporting cancer research and care," said Thomas VanderMeer, MD, interim director of the Upstate Cancer Center. "Her visionary leadership helps secure transformative philanthropic support, elevates community engagement and strengthens institutional partnerships."

Going forward, the Eileen Pezzi Award will be presented annually to a researcher whose career research demonstrates exceptional scientific merit, innovation and potential for significant impact on patient care.
