Upstate's Mobile Mammography Van's spring, summer calendar finds it traversing CNY byways

The Upstate Mobile Mammography Program will be out and about in a community near you this spring and summer. The Upstate Mammography Van will be in 17 different locations, as far north as Old Forge, east to Utica and west to Waterloo.

“Transportation, insurance gaps, and cost often prevent women from accessing breast cancer screenings,” said Wendy Hunt, director of the program. “Upstate's Mammogram Van tackles these challenges by collaborating with conveniently located local businesses and municipalities. Additionally, we partner with programs that provide free screenings to women who don't have insurance and meet the age and income requirements."

Since the van’s rollout, it has screened about 4,790 women, held 704 clinics and helped to identify 20 breast cancers.

The Upstate Mammogram Van serves women age 40 years and older, with or without insurance. A mobile mammography van is a great option for women who prefer to get a mammogram in a location other than a hospital or breast screening center. The van has the same state-of-the-art screening technology found in a clinic setting and images are read by licensed radiologists. The van has a reception area, a changing area, a nursing exam room, and an imaging room.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in New York state. Each year, nearly 16,000 women in New York are newly diagnosed with breast cancer and about 2,500 die from the disease.
