Upstate launching Master’s-level Nurse Practitioner program this fall with path to DNP degree
Upstate Medical University College of Nursing will be offering master’s degree programs for aspiring nurse practitioners starting in the fall semester. This advanced program, designed to be completed in seven semesters, offers students a streamlined path to become Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) or Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (FPMHNPs).
Applications are currently being accepted here.
Upon graduation, students will be eligible to complete the National Board Certification exam. Graduates who pass the exam can seamlessly continue their education by advancing to Upstate’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program — without needing to reapply. With this unique option, students will enter the DNP program already having completed two required courses, saving both time and effort as they pursue the highest level of nursing practice.
“We are offering a fast-track opportunity for motivated baccalaureate-prepared nurses to elevate their skills and make a profound impact on the care they provide,” said Tammy Austin-Ketch, PhD, FNP-BC, FAANP, dean of the College of Nursing. “This program not only prepares nurses to become NPs but also opens doors for those who want to pursue a DNP and lead the profession.”
Open to registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree, the MS NP program provides SUNY tuition rates and financial aid options. Nurses currently employed at Upstate will also benefit from waived application fees and financial assistance.
“Upstate is proud to offer among the best educational packages for its working nurses, and we are glad to have this option available,” said Scott Jessie, chief nursing officer at Upstate University Hospital. “The nurse practitioner field offers incredible opportunities for our nurses to expand their skills and make a difference in patients’ lives.”
Robert Ruiz, interim vice president for Educational Services and dean of Student Affairs, said the FNP and FPMHNP programs fit well with the College of Nursing’s other offerings, including an online bachelor’s degree program and post-master’s certifications, along with the DNP.
“Our goal is to support nurses at every stage of their career journey, whether they aim to become NPs or aspire to achieve the prestigious DNP degree,” he said.
The demand for nurse practitioners, who are licensed to diagnose illnesses, manage conditions, and perform therapeutic procedures, continues to rise. Upstate’s MS NP program offers an exceptional opportunity to advance in this vital, growing profession with the added benefit of a direct route to a DNP degree for those who wish to take their expertise further.
