Upstate honors Dr King by examining health advocacy at Health Justice Conference Jan. 20

Upstate Medical University will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with its annual Health Justice Conference Monday, Jan. 20.

This year’s conference theme is Beyond Labels: Unveiling Intersectional Pathways to Health Equity.

Mary Crossley, JD, interim dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, will present the keynote address, “Health Justice as Barrier Removal.” Crossley has written broadly on issues of inequality in health care financing and delivery and has published articles in numerous law journals, including Columbia Law Review, Iowa Law Review, and Notre Dame Law Review. She is also the author of Embodied Injustice: Race, Disability, and Health.

Past keynote presenters have included Roselyn Tso, director of the federal Indian Health Service, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Uche Blackstock, MD, founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity; and military veteran Heather Irobunda, MD, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist NYC Health and Hospitals.

This year’s conference will feature talks and workshops exploring critical health equity topics, including disability rights, reproductive health, the opioid epidemic, environmental health, structural violence, intergenerational trauma, global health, physician and social responsibility, health care for human trafficking survivors, and financial barriers to health care.

After the welcome address and a panel on disability in health care, each hour the conference will offer three distinct sessions that participants can attend. Some of sessions include Improving Access to Clothing Resources for Refugees, Health Care Needs of Human Trafficking Survivors, Reproductive Justice and Economic Health Policy Impacts on Women and Children’s Health Equity.

The conference runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 4414 B/C Academic Building. Pre-registration by Jan. 17 is preferred, but registration is also available at the door. The conference is free and open to the public and includes complimentary breakfast and lunch. The conference is also available online, more information in the registration link.

The Health Justice Conference is an annual student-run conference that seeks to promote advocacy. The conference helps address ways in which Upstate students and health care professionals can serve as social advocates both personally and professionally. Student poster projects are on display throughout the day.
