Upstate named one of the top hospitals in New York state
Upstate University Hospital is one of top 25 hospitals in New York state.
That’s according to a Newsweek magazine list of America’s Best in State Hospital for 2025.
Upstate is number 20 on the list and is the only Syracuse hospital to be ranked. In fact, the only other hospitals ranked outside of New York City area are St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany (18), Adirondack Medical Center, Saranac Lake (22) and Strong Memorial Hospital (24).
The ranking honors 700 of the nation’s leading hospitals from all 50 states with more than 50 beds.
The listing is based on hospital quality metrics from Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding mortality, safety, readmission, experience, timely and effective care, and patient-reported outcomes.
The ranking also took into account hospital accreditations from, such organizations as The Joint Commission (TJC), American College of Surgeons (ACS) and Magnet Recognition Program by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC Magnet).
Results of a survey of medical professionals, in which participants were asked to recommend leading hospitals in their state, were also reflected in the Newsweek ranking as were results from patient experience surveys.
“Considering that New York state is home to some of the best hospitals in the world, we consider this quite an honor,” said CEO Robert Corona, DO, MBA. “This ranking is a testament to the outstanding work of our medical professionals and others who provide quality care and support our patients and their families during their hospital stay.”
