Upstate’s Bruce Searles named Technologist of the Year
Bruce Searles, PhD, associate professor and director of the Cardiovascular Perfusion at the College of Health Professions, has been named Technologist of the Year by the Technology Alliance of Central New York.
Searles was honored for his contributions to advances and improvements in a STEM field, not limited to engineering.
Searles was among ten honored by the organization at its annual award banquet, held last month. TACNY seeks to facilitate community awareness, appreciation and education about technology.
Searles has been an educator in the perfusion field for nearly 30 years, teaching students and clinicians and publishing widely on the role of simulation in perfusion education.
Searles is one of the authors, along with other faculty members in Health Professions, of a study validating the outcomes of a novel curriculum that uses medical simulation to build competence with fundamental perfusion skills before students start their hospital rotations. He has also written widely on perfusion and adult cardiopulmonary bypass.
Searles is a much sought-after speaker for professional conferences having delivered approximately 100 conference presentations in 10 different countries mostly about safety and simulation.
Additionally, Searles is a certified and licensed perfusionist and ECMO consultant and education coordinator for Crouse Hospital and Upstate University Hospital and has worked with many hospitals in Central New York, operating the Heart and Lung machine during cardiac surgery.
He also holds certification in clinical perfusion from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
Searles is an alum of the College of Health Professions and College of Graduate Studies and holds a PhD from Syracuse University.
