National magazine lists Nappi Wellness Institute as one of the ‘standout specialty healthcare projects’ of 2023

The Nappi Wellness Institute, the 200,000-square foot building that serves as the centerpiece of Upstate Medical University’s ambulatory services, has been recognized as one of the “Standout Specialty Healthcare Projects of 2023,” according to Healthcare Design magazine.

Only eight projects from across North America were recognized by editors.

About the Nappi Wellness Institute, they wrote: “The five-story ambulatory care center houses primary care, specialty clinics and community wellness services within a flexible clinical layout that’s designed to foster interdisciplinary engagement among health providers.

“In all these projects, design teams tailored the environments to the specific needs of their unique populations while embracing empathic, biophilic, and patient-centered design principles.”

The Institute opened June 2 with a ribbon-cutting event attended by Gov. Hochul, SUNY Chancellor King and other dignitaries.

Upstate President Mantosh Dewan called the Nappi Wellness Institute “a transformative health care facility.”

“Wellness is indeed its middle name for healing and wellness is reflected throughout the facility, in its design, in its mechanics, in its operations, in the way our health care professionals work and in the way our patients will be cared for,” Dewan said.

Of the honor by Healthcare Design magazine, Upstate University Hospital CEO Robert Corona, DO, MBA, said the building’s design, construction and operation exemplify the outstanding teamwork at Upstate.

“This building is a testament of the work of hundreds of Upstate professionals from all across campus who worked tirelessly to create a health care facility second to none to serve the people of Central New York,” Corona said. “We are proud to have one of the premier healthcare facilities right here in Syracuse.”

The building is named for Sam and Carol Nappi, whose $8 million gift to the Upstate Foundation is the largest monetary gift in the foundation history.

The project was designed by Stantec; general contractor was Fahs Construction Group; construction manager was Whiting-Turner Contracting Co.
