Upstate celebrates 25th National Cancer Survivors Day event at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo June 5

In what may be the largest event of its kind held locally, more than 1,300 survivors and their guests are expected to attend the Upstate Cancer Center’s National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration at Rosamond Gifford Zoo Sunday, June 5.

This year’s event—the 25th year Upstate has hosted National Cancer Survivors Day—marks the return to an in-person celebration. The event was held virtually in 2020 and 2021.

“We’re delighted to once again welcome survivors and their guests to this important event,” said Chris Benton, events coordinator for the Upstate Cancer Center. “The last several years have been challenging for all, especially cancer patients and their families. We’re elated that so many have chosen to join us for our celebration this Sunday.”

Cancer survivors and their guests have been invited to attend the zoo and enjoy food stations and entertainment for a celebration of life. The event begins at 5:30 p.m., after the zoo’s public hours have ended.

Benton said the 25th milestone anniversary of Upstate’s Cancer Center’s Survivors Day reflects the Cancer Center’s commitment of caring for Upstate New Yorkers. “Beating cancer is a team effort between our physicians, nurses, technicians, pharmacists, therapists, social workers and the patient and family,” Benton said. “And it’s something that we’ve been doing for a long time and will continue to do.”

This year, the Upstate Cancer Center opened a new facility at Upstate Community Hospital and began construction the Upstate Cancer Center at Verona. “We’re bringing cancer care closer to home,” Benton said.

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities nationally and globally during the month of June. It serves as a celebration for survivors, inspiration for those recently diagnosed, support for families affected as well as community outreach.
