Major run to support pediatric cancer research and patient care at Upstate steps off June 4

This year marks the 26th edition of Paige’s Butterfly Run. Since its inception, the run has raised more than $3.5 million in support of pediatric cancer research and pediatric cancer care at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The 2022 run will be held Saturday, June 4, in downtown Syracuse’s Clinton Square, adjacent to the Taste of Syracuse.

The event honors the memory of Paige Yeomans Arnold who was treated at the Dr. William J. Waters Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Upstate when she was just 8 years old. Under the leadership of Paige’s parents, Chris Arnold and Ellen Yeomans, Paige’s Butterfly Run organizes and hosts the only walk/run in Central New York that supports pediatric cancer patients. The run regularly draws more than 3,000 participants, many of them families of the children cared for at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

“Paige’s parents, Chris and Ellen, along with the passion of all those who take part in Paige’s Butterfly Run, have helped shine the spotlight on a most dramatic need in our community and across our region: funding pediatric cancer research with the promise of finding cures and better treatments for our youngest cancer patients,” said Toni Gary, director of community relations and development for Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and Upstate Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Paige’s Run and grateful for its support each year.”

Through the Upstate Foundation, contributions from Paige’s Butterfly Run and related activities are used for a wide range of initiatives at Upstate. These programs and projects support pediatric cancer care, pediatric cancer research, and the families themselves, who are faced with many new challenges when presented with a diagnosis of childhood cancer.

Last October, Paige’s Run established the Paige Yeomans Arnold Endowed Professor in Pediatric Oncology, held by Melanie Comito, MD, division chief of pediatric hematology and oncology at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, and director of the William J. Waters Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders at Upstate Medical University.

This year, Paige’s Butterfly Run will include 5K USATF certified race, 3K fitness run/walk,5K Centipede Team Division, Caterpillar crawl for kids under 5 years old. Registration is still open at: https://runsignup.com/pbr2022
