Upstate to give away 800 free bicycle helmets to kids at New York State Fair Sept. 1.

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- Upstate Medical University will give away 800 free bicycle helmets Friday, Sept. 1 at the New York State Fair.

The helmet giveaway begins at 10 a.m. and continues until supplies last. It will be held just outside the Science and Industry Building’s east entrance.

Children must be present and accompanied by an adult to receive a helmet.

Staff from Upstate’s Pediatric Trauma Service and Safe Kids Upstate New York will ensure each helmet fits properly.

By law, all bicyclists under the age of 14 are required to wear approved bicycle helmets when bicycling or riding as passengers on bicycles in New York state.

Each year, about 2,000 New York state residents are hospitalized due to bicycle-related injuries. Of these hospitalizations, approximately 38 percent involve a brain injury.
Health officials say helmets prevent many of these injuries and reduce their severity.

The helmet giveaway this year is made possible with nearly $10,000 in funding support from the Upstate Foundation in conjunction with the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program. In addition to bike helmets, children will receive string backpacks and educational materials.
