Upstate recognizes outstanding service at Fall Faculty Convocation

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- April Stone, whose contributions to Upstate Medical University span 22 years, and Franciscan Companies, long-time supporters of Upstate’s educational mission, are among 22 individuals who have been honored for distinguished service to Upstate Medical University at the University's 2016 Fall Faculty Convocation Sept. 14

Among those receiving honors are members of the university’s Academy of Upstate Educators. These educators consistently demonstrate excellence in educational activities, commit to academy activities to enhance the educational environment at Upstate, and provide a resource to faculty colleagues and administrative leaders as they address education-related issues.

Stone has received the President’s Award for Excellence in Philanthropic Service, Individual. In addition to naming a patient room and the interactive playroom floor in Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, Stone donated her time to the Children’s Hospital Advisory Council, serving as a member from 2005 until 2014. She served on the strategic planning and performance evaluation committee; as secretary to the council from 2010 t14; and as chair of the governance committee from 2011 to 14. Along with her company, CNY Infusion Services, she created two funds with Upstate Foundation to benefit pediatric patients and contributed to two capital campaigns at Upstate. She has supported several Foundation events such as Upstate’s annual gala, the CNY Region Skins Game and an art show benefiting pediatric services. She has also made gifts to the Continuum of Care Fund, Critical Care Education Fund and Pediatric Pulmonary Center Fund.

Franciscan Companies has received the President’s Award for Excellence in Philanthropic Service, Corporate. President and CEO Frank L. Smith, Jr., accepted the award on behalf of the company. Franciscan Companies has significantly supported Upstate Medical University, the College of Health Professions, the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and numerous other Upstate programs, while also giving of its time and talents as well as gifts of equipment and other resources to the College of Health Professions.
