Upstate's Derek Cooney honored as CNY's EMS Physician of Excellence
SYRACUSE, N.Y.--Derek Cooney, MD, FACEP, associate professor of emergency medicine medical director of Upstate's Physician Response Team, who also serves as medical director of Rural/Metro, was named 2015 Central New York Emergency Medical Services Physician of Excellence. The award recognizes Cooney's contributions to the emergency medical services community, dedication, responsibility, professionalism and insight in the prehospital environment. Cooney is an author, researcher and clinician who exemplifies collaborative work within a complex system of emergency medical services. In 2014, he co-directed the Upstate Prehospital Medicine and Trauma Teaching Day: We Are One. The initiative expanded collaborative attendance and EMS educational resources to hunds of local providers from many agencies. Additionally, Cooney provides clinical oversight as program director for the EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship at Upstate.
