Breast Health and Breastfeeding Medicine division opens at Upstate

Breast Health and Breastfeeding Medicine division opens at Upstate

Jayne R. Charlamb, M.D., a 14-year veteran of Upstate’s Department of Surgery, will be director of the new division.  Charlamb, one of a handful of physicians in New York state to also be an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), is coordinating with lactation consultants around the area to provide comprehensive breastfeeding support and the opportunity for women with complicated cases to seek treatment.

“Our program will provide treatment options for mothers with complicated breastfeeding issues. These can include breast pain, infections or problems with milk supply,” explains Charlamb. “With the right support, the majority of women with low supply issues can improve and sustain their milk supply for their babies. We can help them do that.”

In addition to providing breastfeeding support, the new division will treat benign breast conditions and provide women at high risk for developing breast cancer with a comprehensive screening and prevention program.

Patients in the Breast Cancer High Risk Program are typically considered high risk because of family history, genetic testing or biopsy results. This program provides access to enhanced screening and prevention services, genetic counseling and other services.

Charlamb is currently working with a limited number of patients. The Division of Breast Health and Breastfeeding will take on new patients over the next six months.
