Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital Medical Director Thomas Welch, MD, talks with Laura Hand from CNY Central about human enterovirus-D68, a virus that spread widely across the United States. The children's hospital, along with the Onondaga County Department of Health, was the first in New York state to announce confirmed cases of EV-D68. Children with asthma have been hardest hit by the respiratory virus, as it can complicate breathing issues with asthmatics. At this time, those 16 years of age and under are being asked to refrain from visiting patients in the hospital to avoid spreading the illness.

Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital patient, seven-year-old Kane Wolf, did not miss a beat on his first day of second grade. Kane has been hospitalized for two weeks while he receives chemotherapy to treat neuroblastoma. The dedicated school room and teacher, Mary Ellen Michalenko, help to bridge the gap between hospitalizations and the classroom. Michalenko said allowing patients to continue schooling during treatments is both empowering and comforting.
