Upstate welcomes students to campus with white coat ceremonies, networking dinners
Each orientation program features a mix of academic and social events, including campus overviews; white coat ceremonies; convocations; and a welcome barbecue and Student Services and Activities Fair, to be held Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the Weiskotten Hall Courtyard on the Upstate campus.
The College of Medicine
The College of Medicine will welcome 154 new students to its MD, MD/PhD (a shared program with the College of Graduate Studies), and MD/MPH programs. A highlight of orientation is the White Coat Ceremony, commemorating the cloaking of students as future doctors as they begin their medical training. The ceremony will be held Thursday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. in the Ballroom at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center at Oncenter Complex in downtown Syracuse. The ceremony, and the reception that follows, is made possible in part by the College of Medicine, the Medical Alumni Foundation, a grant from the Onondaga County Medical Society, and the Parents and Family Association of the Medical Alumni Foundation. Other highlights of orientation are a Dinner with a Doctor program and a dinner dance. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 11.
The CNY Master of Public Health & Certificate Programs
Upstate’s Public Health Program is planning two full days of special activities for its incoming class of 19 students Thursday and Friday, Aug. 21 and 22. During orientation, new students will attend a field placement poster session, which will showcase current MPH students’ practicum experiences. The poster presentations will be held Friday, Aug. 22 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the ninth floor Dining Hall in Weiskotten Hall. The public is also invited to attend the poster session. Upstate and Syracuse University established the Central New York Master of Public Health program in the fall of 2009 as a joint graduate degree program. As part of the collaboration students receive a joint diploma from Upstate, through the College of Medicine, and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
The College of Graduate Studies
The College of Graduate Studies will welcome 20 new doctoral students to its degree-granting programs that include: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PhD/MS); Cell & Developmental Biology (PhD/MS); Microbiology & Immunology (PhD); Neuroscience (PhD); Pharmacology (PhD/MS); and Physiology (PhD/MS). To introduce its new students to faculty, the college will offer its Dinner with a Research Scientist Monday, Aug. 25.
College of Health Professions
Upstate’s College of Health Professions will welcome 147 new students who are pursuing careers in cardiovascular perfusion, medical imaging sciences, medical biotechnology, medical technology, physician assistant, physical therapy (doctoral program), radiation therapy and respiratory therapy. The college’s annual White Coat Ceremony will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium at the Schine Student Center, located on the Syracuse University campus. Health Professions students will each receive their white coat as a welcome gift from the College of Health Professions’ Alumni Association. Franciscan Companies, Upstate’s President’s office and the Dean’s Office of the College of Health Professions will sponsor the reception for students and their families following the ceremony. The white coat ceremony conveys to students that health care professionals not only treat, but also care for patients. Students will be welcomed to their college and the health care profession in the presence of parents, family members, friends, campus administration, faculty and staff.
College of Nursing
The College of Nursing will welcome 81 new students to its nursing degree programs (bachelor’s and master’s in nursing programs; Post Master’s Advanced Certificate program and the Doctor of Nursing Practice program).
A highlight of the fall semester is the College of Nursing Convocation, to be held Thursday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. in the ninth floor auditorium in Weiskotten Hall.
