Dr. Ran Anbar is honored by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will honor Ran Anbar, M.D., director of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, for the body of his work with cystic fibrosis patients and his bountiful research contributions at its second annual 65 Roses Dinner Dance on March 15. Anbar will be the first person ever to be honored at this event.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Anbar as our honoree,” said Karen Ferguson, executive director, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “He has always been a strong proponent of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and our work and he is well-loved in our community. Our patients and their parents love him. His work with them is nothing short of amazing.”

Currently, Anbar and his team are involved in Vertex studies of drugs that could help the majority of patients with cystic fibrosis, such as those with the most common CF gene mutation, delta F508. Close to 90 percent of CF patients at the Upstate Pediatric Pulmonary and Cystic Fibrosis Center carry at least one copy of this mutation. Anbar also recently served as principal investigator on a new oral medication called Kalydeco. Upstate was one of the test sites for Kalydeco and the trial showed great success in improving lung function and nutritional status in patients who have the CF gene mutation G551D.

This month, a book edited by Anbar titled “Functional Symptoms in Pediatric Disease: A Clinical Guide” will be published by Springer. In the book, Anbar discusses how patients with CF can be affected physically as a result of their emotions, thoughts and feelings, and how various approaches--like biofeedback, hypnosis, meditation and yoga--can help these patients.

“I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had as director of the Upstate Pediatric CF Center,” Anbar said. “I’m fortunate to get to help children with CF to live better lives.”

Anbar has been at Upstate for nearly 20 years. The Pediatric Pulmonary Center, located at Upstate University Hospital Downtown Campus, is a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation accredited Care Center. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation accredits more than 110 centers nationwide. Each center is reviewed annually.
